HOW TO CONTINUE TO PROGRESS AS YOU AGE

For as long as Julian Smith has been posting, he's heard the same warning. "Wait till you're 40, man. Wait till your knees start feeling it." This week he turns 39 — his last year in his 30s — and he's getting there with no creaks, no cracks, and no plans to slow down. He's convinced that isn't luck. It's a direct result of how he's trained since day one.

THE CHEAT CODE

Everyone wants to know what the guys at the very top are doing right now. Julian's answer is to stop looking at the top and start looking at who's still doing it. The lifters who built serious physiques decades ago and never stopped — Robbie Robinson, Michael Hearn, Arnold Schwarzenegger still training hard into his 70s.

They're the finish line. If you want to know what actually works long term, copy the people who've already proven it lasts. That's the lens for everything below.

THREE MYTHS THAT BREAK LIFTERS DOWN EARLY

MYTH 01 — You have to keep lifting heavier to keep growing.

Three and a half plates for ten clean reps beats five plates for a sloppy two — every time. Bodybuilding was never about what's on the bar; it's about stimulating the muscle. Chase the number instead of the stimulus and you trade a few short-term ego lifts for long-term wear.

MYTH 02 — More weight always means more progress.

Your joints don't care what's loaded. There's a difference between progressively challenging a muscle and burying your structure under weight it never needed. Stimulate the muscle, control the load, protect the joints — that's how you keep training years from now instead of nursing an injury.

MYTH 03 — Getting bigger means getting less athletic.

Muscle shouldn't cost you your movement. Mobility, clean form, and full ranges of motion keep you athletic enough to actually use the body you're building. The goal isn't to get bound up in your own size — it's to stay capable.

Longevity is the whole point. Keep the body healthy, clean, and fresh so you can do everything you want to do — long term.

What Julian's carrying into his 40s, 50s and 60s

  • Train the muscle, not the ego. The stimulus is the goal, not the number on the bar.
  • Protect the structure. No piling on weight your joints didn't sign up for.
  • Stay athletic. Mobility and clean form so you're never bound up in your own muscle.
  • Play the long game. Do the basics, honestly, for a very long time.

None of it is exotic. That's exactly the point. The lifters who last aren't chasing the newest trick — they're doing the fundamentals with intention, year after year.

It's the same philosophy behind The Daily Pump, Julian's daily training app: programming built to make progress today without costing you tomorrow.
